Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar aka Vijay is a famous Indian actor, film producer, playback singer, and philanthropist who was born on 22 June 1974 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. He is popular for his work in the Tamil film industry. He started his career in the movie Vetri as a child actor and later made his debut in the 1992 movie Naalaya Theerpu as a lead actor.
He is the son of film director and producer S.A. Chandrasekhar. Both Vetri and Naalaya Theerpu were directed by his father. Vijay was a Roman Catholic by birth and took his Holy Association to a Chennai church. He had a sister, Vidhya, who died at the age of two years. His father, S. A. Chandrasekhar, is a popular movie director and his mother, Shoba Chandrasekhar, is a popular playback singer and Carnatic vocalist. Vijay married a Sri Lankan Tamil, Sangeetha Sornalingam on 25 August 1999. They have two children, a son born in 2000 in London named Sanjay, and a daughter born in 2005 in Chennai named Divya. Divya portrayed a small role as her father’s daughter in the movie Theri (2016) and Jason Sanjay made a cameo appearance with his father in the movie Vettaikaaran (2009).

On 26 July 2009, Vijay started a social welfare organization “Vijay Makkal Iyakkam” that was formally launched at Pudukottai. It is responsible for much of his charitable work. Vijay has appeared with Suriya, Jyothika, and R. Madhavan in a short commercial video about child poverty, labor, and lack of education, titled “Herova? Zerova?” which was produced by Surya in an effort to exclude children who drop out of school at an early age. At Egmore Government General Hospital, they presented golden rings to newborn babies.
Vijay was listed #49 in the year 2013 in Forbes India’s “Celebrity 100 List” and raised his rank to #41 in the year 2014 based on the income and popularity of Indian celebrities. He was the highest-ranked among actors from Tamil cinema.
