top bengali comedy movies

Director: Salil Dutta

Writer: Bibhuti Mukherjee (screenplay)

Stars: Uttam Kumar, Moushumi Chatterjee, Santosh Dutta, Sumitra Mukherjee, Ranjit Mullick, Bikash Roy

Ogo Bodhu Shundori (English: Hey Beautiful Bride) is one of the top Bengali comedy movies and was one of the last movies of the iconic Bengali actor Uttam Kumar, who died during production. A lookalike was brought in to stand in for Kumar during the final sections of the film, with younger brother Torun Kumar’s voice was dubbed in. The movie is a Bengali reworking of the story of Pygmalion, heavily drawn upon the hit British musical My Fair Lady. Music for the movie is a high point. Sanjay Basu’s title track, which has been composed by the director himself, is pleasing to the ears.

14. Abby Sen (2015)

top bengali comedy movies
source: www.wikipedia.org

Director: Atanu Ghosh

Writer: Atanu Ghosh

Stars: Abir Chatterjee, Raima Sen, Chiranjeet Chakraborty, Arunima Ghosh, Bratya Basu, Priyanka Sarkar, Kanchan Mullick, Neel Mukherjee, Biswanth Basu

Science fiction films are very rarely made in Tollywood and certainly, none have been made so far on the subject of time travel. Atanu Ghosh’s new movie Abby Sen is based on that concept which revolves around a man’s journey as he goes back in time. It was interesting to add a curious angle to time travel by making Abby a sci-fi buff himself who analyses his own experiences with those happening in classic films which he has seen! Further, it gave a new dimension to the eternal tussle of a sensitive man torn between illusion and reality. Overall, Abby Sen is a film you should watch for its great performances.

But if you’re looking for a heavy dose of hi-tech sci-fi, stick to Hollywood. Abby Sen will tickle you with nostalgia, pinch you with love, and will hug you with laughter. This movie always comes in the category of “Best Bengali Movies 2015”. The main strong point of the movie is that it’s precise and has not been dragged. Abir and Abby were good, Raima, Arunima, and Priyanka did their job well. Chiranjeet as a scientist was average but with the funny dialogues, you will find him attractive. This Friends Communication movie is a good one-time watch.

source: www.saavn.com

top bengali comedy movies
source: ravepad.com

Directors: Sudeshna Roy, Abhijit Guha

Writers: Anindya Bose, Sudeshna Roy, Abhijit Guha

Stars: Neel Mukherjee, Rudranil Ghosh, Parambrata Chatterjee, June Malia, Rimjhim Mitra

This movie introduces us to the world of three friends. The movie presents a collage of various clearly engaging moments, each of which is magical in its own right. Directors Sudeshna Roy and Abhijit Guha did a wonderful job of making the movie look totally real and natural, with every onscreen event appearing as a regular order of the early goings-on. Yes, the movie looks just a bit dated but the wonderful screenplay and the absolute reality of the characters easily hide that minor shortcoming. “Teen Yaari Katha” once again proves that, when it comes to making a really good movie, there are no alternatives to having a really sound, tightly-woven script.

top bengali comedy movies
source: www.wikipedia.org

Bhooter Bhabishyat (English: Future of the Past or Future of Ghost) became one of the biggest hits of 2012 among the Bengali movies. It is a movie with a supernatural element. If you are a fan of black comedy, then Bhooter Bhabishyat is the perfect movie for you. It is a story of Ghost and meant to be a comic entertainer. The story revolves around a haunted house that is being pulled down and replaced with a swanky shopping mall. Apparently, the ghosts who belong to different eras consider this as their home so what happens later on shapes the rest of the story.

Mrinal Sen, the director, made Akash Kusum (Up in the clouds) in 1965. Akash Kusum was on the desire of a middle-class executive to rise in growth and greater social acceptability. Soumitra Chatterjee played the central role in this movie. It had a somewhat straightforward story with not many thematic creations, but contained experiments with cinematic techniques like “Jump Cuts.” It’s a good movie to watch which is full of comedy and drama.

top bengali comedy movies
source: fridaycinemas.co

Director: Manu Sen

Writer: Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar

Bhrantibilas is a 1963 Bengali movie based on the 1869 play Bhranti Bilas by Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, which is itself based on William Shakespeare’s “The Comedy of Errors”. Although the original play was set in an understated, distant past, the movie relocates the story to modern-day India. The movie reveals the story of a Bengali merchant from Kolkata and his servant who visit a small town for a business appointment but, while there, are mistaken for a pair of locals, leading to much confusion.

top bengali comedy movies
source: www.wikipedia.org

Director: Satyajit Ray

Writer: Satyajit Ray (screenplay), Rabindranath Tagore (stories)

Stars: Soumitra Chatterjee, Aparna Sen, Chandana Banerjee, Kumar Roy, Anil Banerjee

The title means “Three Girls”, and the film’s original Indian release contained three stories. However, the international release of the movie contained only two stories, missing out on the second (“Monihara: The Lost Jewels”). However, there are now DVD versions available that contain all three movies. The story of three women is nicely portrayed, Nanda a man from Kolkata was posted as postmaster in the malaria-infested village where Ratan a small Orphan looks after him. The second story is about a student, Amulya, who returns to his village after finishing his exams.

6. Parash Pathar (1958)

top bengali comedy movies
source: wikipedia.org

Director: Satyajit Ray

Based on: Short story Paras Pathar by Parasuram (Rajsekhar Bose)

Stars: Tulsi Chakravarty, Ranibala Devi, Kali Banerjee, Jahar Roy, Gangapada Basu, Chhabi Biswas, Pahari Sanyal

On Satyajit Ray’s Parash Pathar, Tulsi Chakraborty played the main lead. Played out in the format of a fantasy drama, Chakraborty denies a host of emotions that keep one hooked from frame one to frame end. Every emotion that he displayed was real and obvious. Every scene is remarkable and every condition is well thought out. This movie is one of the top Bengali comedy movies which was directed by none other than Satyajit Ray. The English version of this popular movie, The Philosopher’s Stone.

The movie moves like a storybook with all focus on the protagonist and then another thing that brings depth to the movie is the lovely Bengali background music. The plot of the movie is very simple but it’s the way the story is presented that makes it a classic. Those who have seen Parash Pathar, consider yourself blessed. Those who haven’t seen the 1958 masterpiece yet, well…

5. Jamalaye Jibanta Manush (1958)

top bengali comedy movies
source: www.ontohinbd.com

Director: Prafulla Chakraborty

Music Director: Shyamal Mitra

Stars: Bhanu Banerjee, Basabi Nandi, Shela Pal, Jahar Roy, Haradhan Banerjee, Shyam Laha, Ajit Chatterjee, Kamal Mitra, Pahari Sanyal, Chhabi Biswas, Tulsi Chakraborty, Gourishree, Nripati Chattopadhyay, Aparna Debi & many others.

Jamalaye Jibanta Manush, at first look, is a comic love story with an innovative plot and hilarious dialogues. But if one looks carefully, the movie is a satire, a sarcastic take on the then society. Bhanu Bannerjee is at his best – teaching the .hum hum Gudi Gudi dance to all the Apsaras in Heaven! Shyamal Mitra scored the music in the film.  It is a good movie to watch. There are many comedy scenes in the movie which never fail to make you laugh.

4. Mahapurush (1965)

top bengali comedy movies
source: www.wikipedia.org

Director: Satyajit Ray

Based on: Birinchibaba by Parashuram

Stars: Charuprakash Ghosh, Rabi Ghosh, Somen Bose, Satya Bandyopadhyay, Haridhan Mukherjee, Satindra Bhattacharya, Santosh Dutta, Geetali Roy, Renuka Ray

Mahapurush or The Holy Man is a black comedy of sorts that focuses on corrupt godmen who con people and make money in the name of religion. The director points out that the coward (Kapurush) and the genius (Mahapurush) can exist within the same person. The performance by all the actors was good. Mahapurush O Kapurush tickles with quite a few chucklesome situations.

The first half was more entertaining and comical than the second. The storyline is predictable. The story is quite simple, a love triangle, under the surface a complex range of emotions are felt. The movie has a rich script carried off with much self-confidence and relish by its cast. It is definitely once a watch and will certainly make you go back and revisit Ray. The story thereafter is a roller-coaster ride, somewhat similar to what we have seen in the cult movie.

3. Galpa Holeo Satyi (1966)

top bengali comedy movies
source: wikipedia.org

Director: Tapan Sinha

Writer: Tapan Sinha

Stars: Bhanu Bandopadhyay, Jogesh Chatterjee, Rabi Ghosh, Chaya Devi, Ajoy Ganguli, Bankim Ghosh, Bharati Devi

It is one of the best Bengali old comedy movies which you should not miss at any cost. The truth is, this Tapan Sinha classic is a mind-blowing classic. A non-convoluted drama with a special message. And I give it to the director for roping in such fabulous actors who make this movie seem a slice from everyday life. You will never feel that they are playacting. Superlative natural performances, setting, costumes, dialogues, and situations make this movie so close to reality. Incidents that take place in this particular house shown in the movie could have happened in my house, or in your house in the 60s. It is in black and white, a tint that makes old movies even more enjoyable.

2. Heerak Rajar Deshe (1980)

top bengali comedy movies
source: www.wikipedia.org

Director: Satyajit Ray

Writer: Satyajit Ray

Stars: Soumitra Chatterjee, Utpal Dutt, Rabi Ghosh, Tapen Chatterjee, Santosh Dutta

Heerak Rajar Deshe (In the land of the Diamond King) is the sequel to the 1969 film Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne and the second installment of the Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne series directed by Satyajit Ray. The musician duo of Goopy Gyne and Bagha Byne make a comeback in this sequel, where they are invited to the court of the Hirak Raja (The Diamond King), for their musical skills. They have to perform at the kingdom’s Jubilee Celebrations. But coming to the kingdom, they use their natural goodness and curiosity to find out that all is not well in the kingdom. There is the exploitation of poor farmers and diamond miners.

1. Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne (1969)

top bengali comedy movies

Director: Satyajit Ray

Writer: Upendra Kishore Raychowdhury

Stars: Tapan Chatterjee, Rabi Ghosh, Santosh Dutta, Jahor Roy, Harindranath

Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne is a delightful, fun film for children of all ages. The movie ran to packed houses in Bengal for a record fifty-one weeks and was by far the most commercially successful Ray film. After all,  a movie with magic, beautiful songs, the antics of Goopy and Bagha, the dance of fat ghosts, and memorably funny evil characters just could not go wrong.

Goopi and Bagha are two characters who meet in a jungle being banished by the King of their village. They by chance meet the King of Ghosts and he gives them three boons for their simplicity and innocence. The rest of the story revolves around how they use those boons for the betterment of the Shundi Kingdom. Even though this is mostly touted as a children’s film, it, without a doubt, features in every adult’s favorite list. The first movie in the Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne series was made by Satyajit Ray, which became the longest-running movie in the history of Bengal, running for 51 straight weeks! This movie is one of the best and top Bengali comedy movies which must be included in the list. Without adding this movie, the list will not be completed.
