The Best Ghost Movies on Netflix You Must Watch
1. The Exorcist (1973)
In the paranormal world, exorcisms are considered to be the worst experiences ever. In history, there are many cases where exorcisms have been done to save people from demonic possessions. The Exorcist is an exorcism-based horror movie directed by William Friedkin inspired by his own novel of the same name. The Exorcist is considered one of the scariest movies of all time and the interesting fact about the movie is that not only it was inspired by the true story but during its shooting, the crew members and actors witnessed paranormal events. It is believed that the set on which it was being shot was cursed.
Anyhow The Exorcist was inspired by the true story of Roland Doe who was possessed by some demons and underwent a series of exorcisms performed by two priests. The boy was badly hurt by the demon and bruises could be seen all over his body. Doe’s mother badly wanted her son back so she decided to perform a series of exorcisms on her son to cure him. With the help of local priests, the lady performed exorcisms on her son which were also recorded by the priests. It is believed that the boy was then cured and his identity was never revealed, as in the movie the exorcism is done on a girl but in reality, it was Doe (which is not even his real name).

2. The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005)
One of the best ghost movies on Netflix ever made in history is The Exorcism of Emily Rose and of all the movies on the list, this is the one story that none of you wants to be true at all. The movie was released in 2005 under the direction of Scott Derrickson.
The movie was rated on the list of “Most Frightened Performance” by MTV movie awards. But sadly it was just not a fictional movie but it was based on the true story of Anneliese Michel who died after undergoing a series of ritual exorcisms for 10 months. This is considered as one of the most tragic events ever happened in history. To find out more, check out the best ghost movies based on true stories.

3. Paranormal Activity (2007)
Paranormal Activity is an American supernatural ghost movie consisting of 6 movies created by Oren Peli. In this movie, Katie and Micah are a young couple who have been living together for about three years. When strange and unusual noises in the night start to occur, Micah decides to find out what’s causing it by recording themselves at night using his video camera.
The movie preys on the classic fear of what happens when you are asleep and cannot control what is happening around you. What makes this movie effective though is the way it is filmed. The use of handheld cameras as if shot “home movie” style gives us a sense that we are in the characters’ shoes and also adds to the sense of realism.

4. The Blair Witch Project (1999)
The Blair Witch Project is an uncommon, hyper-real ghost movie. There’s no traditional opening title sequence. Instead, it opens with a chilling message describing three students making a documentary about a legend in Maryland known as the Blair Witch who lives in the woods. They interview several locals who seem to think the legend is real.
The three students then head back to their hotel before making their way into the forest to see what they can find. It’s here the movie starts with the scares, during their camping they begin to get lost and fall out with each other. This all leads them to a house and surely finds footage-style endings where you never really know what’s happened to them. To know more, you have to watch the movie.

5. The Gift (2015)
The Gift is a psychological horror movie with a killer twist. The Gift is the story of Simon and Robyn (Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall), a young married couple who move to California after Simon receives a big promotion. With a beautiful house and a new start, everything seems to be going fine. But one day, a chance encounter between Simon and an old friend will change everything.
While shopping for furniture, Simon ran into Gordon “Gordo” Mosley, with whom he attended high school. He roughly remembers Gordo and moves on. However, Gordo continues to show up time and time again, leaving random gifts at their doorstep and showing up at their house in the middle of the day. What is Gordo’s true intention? Is he a friend, or is there something more sinister at play? And is Simon as great as he’s believed to be? To know the answers, you have to watch the movie.

6. 30 Days of Night (2007)
Do watch 30 Days of Night if you want to be scared. It’s so rare that a modern horror movie delivers that. 30 Days of Night brings blood, but mixes it with a brutal, evil, nail-biting intensity that grabs you, drags you through the blood-stained street, and cuts off your head when you least expect it. I may even dare to say that if you are not a typical follower of horror movies, this one may make you wet your pants… and not in a good way!
30 Days of Night is intense and gripping… so intense that even though you’re watching a very gory movie, you may not even notice. I was too caught up in what’s going to happen next. Are the vampires coming? Will they run? Will they hide? Will anyone make it out alive for the love of God?!

7. The Women in Black (2012)
In this movie, Daniel Radcliffe’s (of Harry Potter fame) acting is very serious and angsty. The movie follows a classic haunted house movie formula with moving objects, creepy dolls, and ghostly images. The Woman in Black is a very decent Gothic ghost movie.
This movie has quite a slow-moving pace that adds to the atmosphere and suspense of the storyline. It also heightens the effect of the shocks that hit you every now and then. The movie engages you with a severely creepy atmosphere and intolerable tension to keep you squirming in your seats. The movie also took Daniel Radcliffe seriously as an adult actor.

8. The Amityville Horror (2005)
The Amityville Horror is a 2005 horror movie directed by Andrew Douglas. The movie is a story of the Lutz family who moved to Amityville house and very soon they started to experience some paranormal activities in the house. The movie became a cult classic and its work was highly appreciated by the audience. But was it just a movie or was there a story behind it?
Well, there was a true story behind the movie. The Amityville Horror was inspired by a novel with the same name as that of the movie. But it is believed that this novel was inspired by true events of the Lutz family. George Lutz moved into the Amityville House with his wife and three children. But they only moved to get terrified and scared. They started to experience paranormal activities. The family even claimed to have seen flying objects and heard strange noises. And when they tried to bless the house they were hurt badly. It is believed that before the Lutz family moved in, a boy had shot six members of his family 13 months ago. Since then the house has been considered haunted.

9. The Return of the Living Dead (1985)
This 1985 classic horror-comedy is a one-of-a-kind movie that manages to successfully combine humor, blood, and 1980’s punk rock music and one of the best ghost movies on Netflix to watch. The Return of the Living Dead took a u-turn at the usual horror movie formula of slowly developing a story, apparently for lack of a story in many, and dragging it along until something finally happens was by jumping straight into the developing story.
It takes several minutes before we even see a title and screen credits as the movie launches agreeable characters in two several scenes, then introduces the situation, the release of the chemical, that will drive the movie forward. A fun and funny movie from beginning to end. Not only did it inspire many sequels in its own right, it also inspired many movies yet to come and has earned its place as a classic.

10. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)
No single movie more effectively captured the paranoia and depicted the compliance that troubled America in the 1950s than director Don Siegel’s low-budget, black & white, science fiction chiller “Invasion of the Body Snatchers”. Don Siegel’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers sticks pretty close to the original novel, the name of the town is changed, but otherwise, everything in the movie sticks roughly to the plot of the original novel. I was nearly 60 -70 years old and the movie definitely still had the power to creep my entire family out. It’s a good movie to watch.

11. Green Room (2015)
A movie with suspense, horror, crime, and criminal rock: can it still get better? Yes, it can! We are in love with the presentation by Patrick Stewart. The movie Green Room gets a greater value as one of the last works in which we see the actor Anton Yelchin, who died on June 19, 2016, at 27 years old, pressed by his own car against a concrete mailbox in the house where he lived.
The struggling hard-core band The Ain’t Rights finds themselves in a battle of life and death after a member of the band witnessed a murder scene after a gig in a neo-Nazi hangout. Green Room is one of the most shockingly entertaining movies of 2015 so far.

12. Re-Animator (1985)
This movie stars one of my favorite actors and my all-time favorite scream queen too. With the actor being Jeffery Combs and the queen, well she is the most beautiful Barbara Crampton, one of the best looking 80’s horror girls out there by far.
If you love comedy horror movies like The Return of the Living Dead, Child’s Play, or even Nightmare on Elm Street then this movie should be right up your street. It’s supported by two more series, both of which slowly go downhill as sequels do, but this one is a proper gem.

13. The Entity (1982)
The Entity is a 1983 ghost movie directed by Sidney J. Furie. The Entity is a story of Carla Moran who was a single parent of her four children and claimed that she was being tortured and sometimes even raped by an invisible force. The movie was a great hit of its time and it was considered one of the most haunted movies.
The movie was inspired by a novel with the same name. But The Entity was just not a movie or a novel, it was a real story of a woman named Doris Bither who lived with her four children and faced torture by a poltergeist. She faced all those paranormal events that were featured in the movie. To learn more, visit horror movies inspired by true stories.

14. The Conjuring (2013)
The conjuring is an American ghost movie released in 2013 under the brilliant direction of James Wan. Conjuring was the story of the Perron family who experienced some weird noises in their farmhouse and hired paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren.
After experiencing paranormal events, the investigators declared the farmhouse haunted. The Conjuring was highly appreciated by the audience and critics and it became one of the most horrifying movies of all time. The movie seems so scary that if you come to know it is one of the horror movies based on true stories, you will not dare to watch it again.
